H is for Hagelslag and a recipe that is so simple it almost doesn't count! Bread, butter, and chocolate sprinkles. That's it. Well, not American chocolate sprinkles, (think Wilton), please don't try this with those fake wax bombs. Seek out real chocolate sprinkles, there is absolutely no comparison. The ones most readily available here are De Ruijter sprinkles and if you happen to have a World Market anywhere nearby, a box is only eight bucks and lasts a very long time. (The box says 32% cocoa minimum). These are also available sporadically at our little local Danish bakery. I have seen this Dutch breakfast treat toasted, untoasted, and embellished with other spreads. I prefer toasted because the sprinkles get a little soft and melty. It's kind of funny because I am not someone who would normally pick a chocolate croissant or a chocolate sprinkle donut, and am quite picky about chocolate and bread, but this is just so good! (It's the butter for sure.)
Bonus, there is significantly less sugar in a piece of hagelslag toast than if you went out and got a donut too. The butter, toast, and sprinkles work together to create a definite treat, but not a dessert. I prefer the dark sprinkles but if you want a sweeter chocolate, they do make a milk chocolate version. I knew that these chocolatey sprinkles went very well with Earl grey tea, so I tried mixing some instant black tea into my butter. It was good, but I would likely try to powder some real Earl grey and try it that way next time. Either way, we will have to see if the kiddos like this!

ReplyDeleteI happen to have some of those sprinkles and can attest that there is a HUGE difference! We have a wonderful Dutch/Indonesian store nearby and they have a whole aisle of sprinkles. Love this!
